RESULTS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF BOLGAR FORTIFIED SETTLEMENT IN 2010 (CLIII EXCAVATION)

Abstract

The paper presents the results of archaeological studies of the excavation CLIII on the territory of Bolgar fortifi ed settlement in 2010. The work was carried out within the framework of the program of the Republican Fund "Renaissance", aimed at large-scale restoration and construction works on the territory of the Bolgar fortifi ed settlement. These works were accompanied by rescue archaeological research. Excavation area CLIII of 338 sq. m. was placed on the edge of the terrace in the North-Western part of the settlement at the site of the upcoming construction of infrastructure objects of the River station with the function of the Museum. The excavation revealed 105 objects, including: cellars, various household pits, remains of fences, post pits and burial. 7 objects were related to the pre-Mongolian (V) layer from the point of view of stratigraphy. Most of the discovered objects (26 pillar pits and 53 buildings) belonged to the Golden Horde period (XIII–XV centuries.). 35 of them functioned during the early Golden Horde period and another 33 objects – during the late Golden Horde period. The rest 15 objects were related to the XVIII–XX centuries (I–II layers). The revealed objects were oriented in two directions: North/South and North-North-West/South-South-East. The objects of Golden Horde period were concentrated in several groups. These facts allow us to talk about the street-estate planning of this part of the Bolgar during the Golden Horde period.
