Abstract

The authors consider results of generalization and analysis of materials related to the treatment of raw materials and manufacturing of leatherware, originating from the territory of the Bolgar fortified settlement. Spatial analysis of the industrial waste allocation (leather scraps) and specialized tools (awls, cutting knives), which were identified at the site of the trade and craft district of Bolgar during archaeological studies, allows the authors to identify at least two zones with a number of estates where leather and sewing workshops were located. The first of them was studied in the excavations 18 and CXCII, the second one – in the excavation CLXXIX. These complexes can be dated within the framework of the early Golden Horde period – the second half of the XIII – beginning of the XIV century. In other cases, either solitary leather scraps, or single findings of tools of masters working with leather were revealed in the excavations.
