Abstract

The article discusses the results of archaeological studies of early defensive structures at the Bolgar settlement. The history of the discovery and study of these fortification sites is given, as well as various views on issues related to the interpretation of different elements of fortress construction, identified during excavations of the defensive lines of the site. The important contribution by archaeologist T.A. Khlebnikova, as well as other research scientists, in the discovery and study of the earliest fortifications, that protected the fortified settlement in the X – beginning of the XI century is noted. The paper provides analogies of the construction of the fosses of Bolgar with earlier fortified settlements of the Don and the Northern Black Sea regions, which may indicate the origins and preserved traditions in fortification, as well as military engineering skills brought by the Bolgars to the region of the Middle Volga region.
