Abstract

Uzbekistan boasts a wealth of historical and cultural heritage sites, many of which are linked to the Islamic world. The spread of Islam into Central Asia led to a unique fusion of local traditions and Islamic values, particularly evident in the architectural structures of southern Mawarannahr (modern-day Qashqadaryo region in Uzbekistan). Through field archaeological research, archival data, and the region’s surviving monumental architecture, we can trace the key stages in the development of Qashqadaryo’s shrine architecture. These sources reveal a dynamic interplay between local traditions and Islamic innovations, which shaped the architectural style and construction culture of the Qashqadaryo oasis from the IX to the XX centuries.
