Abstract

This paper deals with the glazed ceramics from the temple complex of Kilsedagh, located in the village of Beyuk Emirli in the Gabala district of Azerbaijan Republic. As is known, Kilsedagh is a multi-layered site. The uniqueness of the monument lies in its original structure. The studies that have begun gives us grounds to determine the complexity of the constructive forms. The article examines the glazed pottery discovered during excavations of the temple complex of Kilsedagh in the course of field research conducted between 2022 and 2024. The chronological range of glazed pottery covers the period from the VIII to the early XIV centuries. Early and late types of Kilsedagh glazed pottery are identified. Painting with engobe was dominant. Ceramics decorated with engraving, manganese painting on a white engobe coating, and polychrome ware under glaze were widespread. Geometric ornamentation prevails in the decoration of the items, featuring depictions of triangles, circles, ovals, and lines. A combination of geometric and floral ornamentation is noted. The ornamentation and forms of the ceramic items of Kilsedagh bring them closer to synchronous assemblages from other ancient settlements of medieval Shirvan, as well as of entire Azerbaijan. Further studies of the cultural layers will clarify many issues concerning the purpose, stratigraphy and dating of the monument.
