Copper Dinars of Bolgar of the 13th Century from the Holdings of the State Historical Museum (Moscow)

Abstract

The article deals with a collection of copper coins minted at the Bolgar mint. The time of issue dates to the 1230s–1250s. The total number of specimens examined is 305 items: 192 dinars bearing the name of the Baghdad Caliph an-Nasir and 113 dinars bearing the name of the Mongol Möngke Khagan. The history of coin circulation in the Bolgar Vilayat during the 13th century is briefly reviewed. The authors specifically focus on the metrological features of the local copper coins, using the numismatic complex from the Bolgar Museum-Reserve as an example. The previously obtained results are given - the maximum histogram using data from 765 dinars is fixed at 2.1 ± 0.2 g. Secondary modes are also identified at values of 3.1±0.2 g, 2.7±0.2 g, and 1.5±0.2 g. The article concludes by listing the weights of the collection coins, separated into dinars bearing the name of an-Nasir and the recoined Möngke dinars. Photographic tables 1 and 2 contain images of the most characteristic specimens.
