Abstract

The paper proposes a system for describing mat prints, presenting their classification based on materials from the Rostislavl and Shishkinskoye hillforts. The primary descriptive parameters are the shape of the print elements and their mutual arrangement features. Nine morphological groups and subgroups of impressions have been identified. An experimental program was developed, modeling various tool types and their usage methods. It is argued that the observed morphological differences in mat prints result from the use of different tools (wide rollers, narrow wheels, beaters with various projections) and distinct impression techniques, which in turn reflect diverse pottery traditions of surface decoration and treatment among the populations of these sites.
