Abstract

The chronological attribution of fragmented amphorae feets from Heraclea Pontica is difficult in practice due to the high variability of shapes and the limitations of existing typologies. This paper deals with the results of a comprehensive study of 189 intact amphorae using geometric morphometrics and statistical analysis. A critical review of previous schemes revealed significant limitations of the concepts available in science. An inductive analysis of empirical data provided an adequate reflection of the actual observed variability in vessels and their foot shapes. The study identified stable patterns in the evolution of foot shapes from early to late types, which made it possible to clarify chronological points. The practical significance of this work lies in working out a procedure for more accurate dating of fragmented amphorae.
