Abstract

The recent studies of the bone industry demonstrate that the technique of deliberate bone knapping in order to obtain the blanks is highly variable and could have had a much wider and diverse application than previously thought. The identifi cation of bone products obtained by means of splitting and retouching creates an additional framework for studying and comparing bone industries. This article features the preliminary results of a study of the technology of deliberate splitting of animal bones ("bone knapping"), revealed on the basis of the materials from the multi-layer Upper Paleolithic site Byki-7 on the Russian Plain (Seim basin, uncalibrated carbon dates from 18 000 to 14 000 B.P).
