MERCHANT'S DWELLING FROM EXCAVATIONS ON THE TERRITORY OF “HILLFORT OF AZAK–TANA WITH NECROPOLIS” IN 2013

Abstract

Merchant dwelling was discovered during rescue excavations on Petrovsky boulevard 7 in 2013. This area is situated central part archeological site “The Hillfort of Azak–Tana with necropolis XIII–XIV c–s”and was full of archeological objects, disposed in 2–3 layers. On excavation site was detected crosstown road, approximately 8 m in width, which is a continue of street founded during previous excavations nearby. This pave was covered with layer of livestock bones. The unearthed remains of dwelling were identifi ed as a basement of merchant house. Inside it were founded out the foundations of two separating–in–lenthways walls. The base of one separating wall was built of boulders, the second wall was made of bricks and adobe bricks. In western part of basement was unearthed tandoor (clay oven) with inserted in it intact kubur (earthenware chimney). Also, there were founded out 8 garbage pits and 1 pole hole. In one of these garbage pits was founded out several hundreds of sheep's shoulders.Until nowadays this subterranean dwelling remains one of the biggest among the dwellings explored in Azak. We can highlight out some interesting fi ndins of XIV c.: pile of glazed cups with sticked sepays (separators). Also here were founded out large glazed cup with tricolored ornament (from south–eastern Crymea), rare sample of glazed cup painted with manganese from Madjar, bysantian glazed cup, bone skinner's tool, bone hook. This dwelling is dating by numerous ceramic and monetary materials.
