Abstract

Over 2200 coins were discovered at excavation 179 of Bolgar settlement in 2012–2016. In addition to Golden Horde coins, the excavation featured two coins of the 10th century and 7 Russian coins of the 18th – early 20th centuries. A total of 15 Oriental coins were preliminarily identifi ed as Iranian. The discovery of a large number of coins is accounted for by the presence of a marketplace in the area. Perhaps, it also accommodated a mint, which is indicated by the discovery of a coinage die and 5 hoards of 13th century silver coins. Two 10th century Samanid coins indicate that the area was populated starting with the turn of the 10th century to become the centre of a large Oriental town in the 13th–14th centuries.
