Abstract

The paper features a brief historiographic review of scientific works considered the funeral rite of the dolmen cultural and historical community from the territory of the Northwestern Caucasus and Abkhazia. The review includes publications by archaeologists and historians of the pre-revolutionary, Soviet and post-Soviet periods. The author of the paper discusses the opinions on the purpose of dolmens, arguing whether they are ancestral tombs or temples. Several problematic issues have been identified. These include the dating of dolmen monuments, as well as their periodization, and constitute one of the key directions in the study of the dolmen culture. The theories of the funeral rite are listed, where according to the prevailing opinion burials were made in a sitting position. A short list of the grave inventory accompanying the burials is provided. Cases of secondary burials, where medieval items are also found, are described.
