A Set of Pewter-Based Fusible Alloy Decorations in the Materials of the Rodanovo Archaeological Culture

In the period of the Rodanovo archaeological culture (12–15th centuries) pewter-based fusible alloy decorations held a special place in the design of costume on the territory of the Perm Cis-Urals. There is a rather wide range of decorations like these in all the main categories – to be worn at the temples, on the neck, waist and hands. Flat neck pendants are the most diverse – in the form of coins, medallions, and lunar pendants, which became traditional decorations for men at the time. Most of the decorations have Old Russian prototypes. Applique decorations - rings and ‘paws’, were a novelty in the costume. There could be two reasons why fusible alloy decorations were so popular. It could be the lack of silver, the main source of what were primarily coins. On the other hand, the spread of new material is probably connected with the beginning of the Old Russian colonization of the Urals, during what it was brought here by the Slavic immigrants.
