Historical and Archaeological Study of the Opoki Hillfort (Rzhevsky District, Tver Region)

This article introduces into scientific discourse new data on the current state of the famous archaeological monument of the Middle Ages in the Rzhevsky district of the Tver region – the fortified settlement of Opoki. In summer 2022, numerous anthropogenic destructions were recorded, lifting material from dumps was collected and analyzed by the authors. The study of these written sources made it possible to trace the development of the original settlement in the fortified settlement of Opoki in 1403 and the increase of its political significance in inter-princely relations. According to the types of ceramics and the time of existence of the objects found on the destroyed parts of the hillfort, the monument is dated to the second half of the XIII – second half of the XVII / beginning of the XVIII century. The prospects of further historical and archaeological research of the hillfort are substantiated. Cartographic fixation of the destruction will contribute to determining a promising place for conducting a field archaeological study of the monument.
