Abstract

Since the 1950s of the 20th century, ceramics has been recognized as the leading feature of culture selection in Russian Neolithic studies. The stone industry was given a supporting role. According to researchers, it largely depended on natural factors. In addition, the characteristics of the tools were quite common for the population of different regions. The theme of this paper is to identify the possibilities of the Neolithic stone industry of the Northern Caspian region for the allocation of archaeological culture. According to this a comparison with complexes of a similar landscape zone of the Northern Caspian and Aral Sea regions was made by the authors. This theme was also conditioned by the fact that the previous researchers noted the great similarity between the stone industries of two regions. Synchronous stone complexes of both regions were compared by the authors. As a result of the work carried out, it was possible to identify many differences in the technique of primary stone splitting. There are also differences in the range of tools. The specificity of the secondary tools processing of the Neolithic population of North Caspian and Aral Sea regions has also been revealed. This allows the author to conclude that the stone industries of the semi-desert zone of the Northern Caspian and the Aral Sea can be the same cultural markers for the Neolithic sites as well as ceramics.
