Abstract

The article deals with the issue of the significance of stone tools in the Early Neolithic collections of the Mari Volga region. Recently, the focus has been on ceramic artifacts. However, the stone itself remains no less significant for the new Stone Age. Since the level of skills in working with flint and other rocks used to create tools, largely characterizes the development of society in the ancient period. The paper presents the characteristics of the inventory of the Middle Volga forest region, accompanying unornamented and pricked pottery. Certain generalizations have been made concerning the features of the Mari early materials directly. The analysis of flint collections from adjacent regions, located in similar landscape conditions, was carried out. These include the Upper Volga region in the west, where the collections of the early stage were considered, as well as the Kama region in the east, where stone tools were taken for comparison from the monuments of the Volga-Kama cultural tradition with pricked ceramics and from the sites of the Lower Kama region. Similarities as well as cultural differences are highlighted. The fact that complexes chronologically similar in dates were compared is also important.
