Abstract

The territory of the Sura and Moksha regions in the 10th-13th centuries was part of the state of Volga Bolgaria, although the borderline position of the region and certain features of its cultural and linguistic environment, as well as the proximity to the world of nomadic steppes and the involvement in the militarydiplomatic struggle of the Finno-Ugric neighbors with Russian principalities, to a certain extent differentiated it from the general Bolgar context of armament and military equipment. The special military-political situation and direct participation in the military events associated with the Mongol campaigns in Eastern Europe determined the originality of the military affairs of these territories. The monuments of the Upper Sura and Moksha regions feature an unprecedented amount of various weapons of the 11th - 13th centuries, the largest number of which is concentrated on one single monument - Zolotarevskoe settlement, which is associated with the role that it played in the history of the region, Volga Bolgaria and Eastern Europe. It was here that the decisive battle was fought, which ended a Mongol campaign against the Volga Bolgars and the Finno-Ugric peoples of the Middle Volga region. The traces of this battle provide science with plenty of information about the state of military affairs of both the Bolgars and the Mongol army.
