Correspondence between K.F. Smirnov and S.A. Popov in the Archive of the Orenburg Governor Museum for History and Regional Studies as a Source on the History of Scientific Communication in the 1950s-70s

The article analyzes the letters from the famous Soviet archaeologist K.F. Smirnov to the Orenburg museum employee S.A. Popov, which were found in the holdings of the Orenburg governor museum for history and regional studies. The author examines the informational potential of this epistolary heritage, which provides a significant supplement to published and archival sources on the organisation of archaeological research in the Southern Urals during the second half of the 20th century. The study of this correspondence reveals specific details about K.F. Smirnov's work on his key articles and monographs, his research plans, and other aspects that cannot be reconstructed solely from published materials. One of K.F. Smirnov's letters, characterizing the organization of the work of the Southern Ural archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences, is introduced into scientific discourse.
