Abstract

The paper analyzes pre-revolutionary publications containing information about ancient burial grounds in the Perm Cis-Urals. The author identifies the following groups of sources: travelers’ notes, collection descriptions, local historians’ publications, publications of state and public scientific organizations. The travelers’ notes include a description of archaeological sites in Perm Governorate made by N.P. Rychkov. It shows that the destruction of burial grounds due to the economic activity of peasants occurred as early as in the 18th century, and most likely even earlier. Private collections of S.G. Stroganov, the Volegov brothers, the Teploukhovs, and others appeared in the mid-19th century. The formation of a significant number of private collections reflects the large volumes of items extracted from archaeological sites, primarily burial grounds. The second half of the 19th century is marked by the flourishing of scientific societies. Local history studies in Perm Governorate were carried out by the Urals Society of Devotees of Natural Science and the Perm Scientific Archival Commission. Their members conducted archaeological excavations in the region and published their results. Some excavations were supported by the Imperial Archaeological Commission, and their results were published in its reports. The details provided by pre-revolutionary authors can be used to assess the current state of already known burial grounds and to search for those not yet discovered.
