About some classical era necropolises in Azerbaijan
Keywords:

Up to now, numerous settlements and burial grounds of the classical era (IV century BC - II century AD) have been discovered and studied in the territory of Northern Azerbaijan. These antique monuments help to supplement the knowledge of the history of Azerbaijan during the existence of the state of Caucasian Albania here. During the construction of the South Caucasus Gas Pipeline, along with sites from other periods, antique settlements and burial grounds were also discovered. The burial grounds consisted mainly of jug burials, with the exception of the Beyimsar burial ground, where both jar and ground burials without mounds were present. To date, more than one hundred burial grounds with burials in jar-kyups have been discovered and studied in the territory of Azerbaijan. Beginning in the 20s of the XX century, burial grounds with jars were discovered in many regions of Azerbaijan, with the exception of the north-eastern part. Their comparative analysis with similar burials in other regions of the South Caucasus, tracing the process of the emergence and spread of this burial rite, its development, etc. allowed us to accumulate valuable initial data for future research into many issues related to this burial rite. During the archaeological excavations of these sites, numerous and diverse examples of material culture were discovered. The study of these artefacts provides additional information about the economy, life, beliefs, handicraft industries, international trade and class stratification of the population of Caucasian Albania.
