We present the results of the preliminary study of pottery obtained during 4-year studies at the Novoslavка-2 burial ground. Dated to 450-550 AD based on artifact analysis, this burial ground belongs to the Komintern type of the Imenkovo culture. In these bi-ritual necropolises, both cremation and inhumation are practiced, the distinctive feature of which is that horse skulls and limbs are placed in grave pits, as well as a special set of burial goods that distinguishes them from other Imenkovo burials. Ceramic complex of the burial ground counts 37 whole and reconstructed vessels and can be typologically divided into 4 groups. Wares of the 1st and 2nd groups have forms typical of the Imenkovo culture, while vessels of the 3rd group have similarities with Imenkovo ceramics and Turbasly pottery of the Southern Urals. Group 4 includes imported vessels resembling vessels from the Eastern Aral Sea and the Aral-Caspian region in style, as well as finds from Early Alanian sites in the North Caucasus. In the course of the study, on the basis of the definition of the “natural structure” and functional parts of the vessels, the degree of stability of the traditions of shaping was revealed: groups 1 and 3 have the most homogeneous structure, group 2 - more diverse, which may indicate the mixing of cultural traditions. These results are in good agreement with the observed elements of burial rites and goods, which allows us to better understand cultural exchanges in the Volga-Ural region during the Migration period.
