The Reconstruction of Silver Decoration Techniques of Iron Toreutics from Southern Siberia

The article presents the reconstruction results of the techniques of silver decoration of small iron toreutics used in the Southern Siberia during the Middle Ages and Modern times. The work is based on archaeological materials from the Minusinsk museum of regional studies (493 copies), dated to the Askiz archaeological culture (X–XIV centuries), Late Middle Ages (XV–XVII centuries) and Modern times (XVIII–XIX centuries). Additionally, ethnographic evidence was used. The reconstruction was carried out on the basis of a techno-traceological study, which included a series of experiments. The conclusion is made about the use of three techniques in Southern Siberia during the period under review. The first one is the Yenisei variant of incrustation, common in the Askiz archaeological culture of the X–XIV centuries. The second one is the incrustation with heat treating. The third is a fundamentally different from the previous ones technology of application, known according to ethnographic data and finds of Modern times.
