This article gives a brief overview of the most significant events in the history of the study of the Pizhma hillfort, starting from the pre-revolutionary period (second half of the XIX – early XX century) and ending with the archaeological excavations of the joint expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences and VyatSU. Iron arrowheads (24 items) were discovered as a result of excavations carried out on the settlement during the above mentioned period. Eight types of iron arrowheads were identified on the basis of the existing analogies, based on the typology by A.F. Medvedev and O.V. Dvurechensky, and the features of their location with stratigraphic and cultural-chronological reference were marked. Based on the study of this collection, the authors hypothesized that the ancient settlement was actively used during the Middle Ages and early modern era. Taking into account the strategic location of the settlement on the Vyatka and Pizhma rivers and the presence of a layer of late medieval materials, the version about the use of the site as a military outpost and its place in the global events in the Vyatka basin area during the colonization period of the region by the Russians was made.
