Abstract

The article deals with the materials from excavations of a medieval burial ground in the water area of the Cheboksary Reservoir in 2021–2023. The burial ground is located on an island. 28 burials were studied on an area of 456 sq. m. Research at the site continues. A comparative analysis of the materials has shown similarities with the burial grounds in the Vetluga-Vyatka interfluve, which researchers attribute to the Mari culture. This is especially true for the Rutka burial ground. The burial rite testifies to the complex ethnic processes in the region. The items from the burial ground are jewelry, tools and weapons. According to preliminary conclusions, the time of functioning of this burial ground falls within the chronological framework, limited from the turn of the IX–X centuries to the turn of the XI–XII centuries, or the beginning of the XII century.
